Prosthetic Dental Implant
In the past, losing a tooth meant you could get a bridge or dentures to fill the place in your mouth where the missing tooth or teeth had been. The benefit of these replacement teeth is that you would have a more natural smile, and these replacement teeth could add strength to your bite when you eat.
Now, there is a better way to replace a lost tooth or teeth. You can receive a dental implant that actually replaces the root of your tooth so that your prosthetic tooth will have the same stability as your other teeth and so that your jaw will remain healthy.
What are Dental Implants?
There are three parts to the process of receiving a new dental implant (s)
- The first part is crafting a post from a material called biocompatible titanium. The post is then implanted into the patient’s jawbone. While the patient heals, their bones and the post fuse together.
- The post is then covered with a material called a connective abutment, which is the material that the new tooth will be attached to. Which brings us
- The final step of the process when a new lifelike tooth is attached.
Maintaining A Dental Implant
When a person has a dental implant, they might be able to have a crown, a partial, or even a complete denture attached to the implanted pole. Another benefit of the implant is that it will help maintain a strong, healthy jawbone by allowing your jaw and mouth to function normally with every bite you take and chew.
With an implant, nutrients go to the bone and the bone is stimulated which each chew and each bit. This could not happen if the root had not been implanted into the jawbone.
