ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

At their core, dental implants are so much more than just artificial teeth. When an implant is placed in your jawbone by a dental professional, it quickly bonds with your natural bone. This allows it to act as a sturdy base for one or more crowns – acting as the closest thing to natural, healthy teeth that you can get.

TYPES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

There are a few different types of dental implants that you can choose from depending on your needs. A single unit dental implant is designed to replace a single lost tooth in your mouth. A multi dental implant configuration is one where a limited number of implants supports multiple artificial teeth. For a full mouth of artificial teeth, you may only need eight implants to act as a foundation for up to 32 new teeth.

WHAT IS THE FOR COST OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

The cost of a dental implant will obviously vary depending on a wide range of factors, including the total number that you need and even the area of the country where you live. Generally speaking, you could pay between $1,000 and $3,000 for a dental implant and between $500 and an additional $3,000 for the associated abutment and crown.

DOES INSURANCE COVER DENTAL IMPLANTS?

The answer to this question will vary entirely on the insurance plan that you have. Some plans cover a dental implant procedure, while others won’t. If there are medical issues associated with your decision to get dental implants (like previously lost teeth), the chances that your policy will cover it will likely be higher.

HOW TO PAY FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Even if your insurance policy doesn’t cover dental implants, you still in luck. At your next appointment our professional treatment coordinators can show you the available third party financing options. These options many times can help you to get the procedure you need right away and then pay for it on a monthly basis until the balance is paid in full.

BEFORE DENTAL IMPLANTS

WHO NEEDS DENTAL IMPLANTS?

If you are currently missing teeth, if you have cracked teeth, if you have loose-fitting dentures or don’t want dentures at all, you’re an excellent candidate for a dental implant procedure. Experiencing bone loss is another sigh that dental implants are something you’ll want to consider.

WHEN DO YOU NEED DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental implants are necessary when you begin experiencing issues like tooth loss, tooth decay and others. If you lose a tooth and do not replace it, the entire jawbone can start to deteriorate quickly – thus leading to even more health-related issues down the road.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS?

The cost of a dental implant will obviously vary depending on a wide range of factors, including the total number that you need and even the area of the country where you live. Generally speaking, you could pay between $1,000 and $3,000 for a dental implant and between $500 and an additional $3,000 for the associated abutment and crown.

DENTAL IMPLANTS VS DENTURES & BRIDGES

Dental implants are more permanently installed in your mouth and bond with your jawbone in a natural way. Dentures are a dental appliance that is removable – meaning that they provide minimal chewing support and could slip and slide. Dental bridges, are usually a solution for a row of missing teeth, unlike a dental implant that are more permanent.

WHAT TYPE OF DOCTOR TREATS DENTAL IMPLANTS?

According to the American Dental Association, all general dentists can offer dental implant treatments in the United States. However, you may be referred to a specialist that has more direct experience with this process, like an oral surgeon or periodontist.

DURING DENTAL IMPLANTS

ARE THERE ANY RISKS WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS?

As is true with any other type of medical procedure, there are certain risks involved with getting dental implants that you need to be aware of. A dental implant could fail to integrate to your bone, thus leading to instability. Infection is also a major complication of the process, as is perforation of nearby parts of your mouth like the labial plate, the inferior alveolar canal and others.

WOULD DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCEDURE BE PAINFUL?

The answer to this question will vary depending on your pain tolerance. However, thanks to anesthesia, most patients don’t find a dental implant procedure that much more painful or uncomfortable than any other oral process they might go through.

CAN I GET SEDATION FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?

In the majority of all situations, a local anesthetic is used to numb the mouth before the procedure begins – meaning that you will probably be awake for the duration. If you’re having a number of implants installed at one time, you may be a candidate for conscious sedation. You will be conscious and aware of your surroundings, but will feel no pain.

HOW LONG A DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCEDURE TAKES?

This will obviously vary depending on how many dental implants you’re having installed. However, the procedure itself is usually performed in stages to give your mouth a chance to heal – meaning that it could take months from start to finish.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCEDURE?

After your damaged teeth have been removed and your jawbone has been prepared via grafting, the dental implant will be placed in your mouth. During a separate session, after your bone has properly grown and had a chance to heal, you will then go through abutment placement and finally artificial tooth placement.

LIVING WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS

CAN I EAT, DRINK OR SMOKE AFTER?

You can eat as soon as an hour after surgery, but be sure to stick to soft foods for at least the first day. Likewise, don’t drink from a straw for at least 24 hours. You should absolutely not smoke under any circumstances as doing so can interfere with the body’s normal healing process.

CAN I BRUSH MY TEETH?

You can resume your normal tooth brushing and other oral hygiene practices roughly 24 hours after your surgery.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS?

Generally, the recovery process takes about four weeks and after four to six months you will receive your final prosthesis. But In addition to specific recommendations made to you by your oral surgeon and the dental team, you should try to eat softer foods that are easier to chew.

DO I NEED A FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENT?

Yes! Under normal circumstances, your surgeon will want to see you for a follow up appointment roughly three weeks after your surgery for suture removal and postsurgical instructions along with the observation of soft tissue healing. And another appointment in about six weeks post placement with the expectation that the soft tissue has mostly healed.

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS A DENTAL IMPLANTS TREATMENT?

Obviously, success rates with dental implants vary based on factors like your health and where in the jaw the implant is placed. However, it has been written that implants have a success rate of up to 98% and, if properly taken care of, can last for the rest of your life.
