ABOUT BRACES

WHAT ARE BRACES?

Orthodontists are dentists who have specialized in the alignment of teeth. One of the tools that orthodontists can correct tooth alignment is through using braces to straighten teeth. This is done to help patients improve their bite between the lower and upper jaw. Using brackets, bands, and wires, braces will slowly move your teeth into the right positions, straightening your teeth and improving your smile!

TYPES OF BRACES

There are multiple types of braces that patients can choose from. One type is the traditional metal braces and wires. Another popular type is ceramic braces that are less conspicuous than traditional braces. Finally, lingual braces are placed on the rear face of each tooth.

PAYMENT OPTIONS FOR BRACES?

Fortunately, you have a wide variety of options that can help you fund your braces. First, your insurance provider might help you cover some of the cost of braces. In addition, your orthodontist may also have payment options. While some individuals and families might elect to set up a payment plan, your orthodontist might also provide you with a discount if you pay in full upfront.

COST OF BRACES?

The price of braces will vary depending on the orthodontic practice, the specific individual factors regarding your teeth, the types of braces applied, and your age. While the average cost of braces is around $6,000, the price of braces can range between $3,000 and $10,000.

DOES INSURANCE COVER BRACES?

Dental insurance plans often help cover the cost of braces, particularly if the patient is a child. If you have a medical need that requires braces, your insurance provider is more likely to cover the cost. If you are an adult, or if the issue is cosmetic, insurance likely won’t cover the cost of braces.

BEFORE BRACES

WHY DO YOU NEED BRACES?

Braces can be used to correct a variety of medical problems. These include crowded teeth, overbite, and underbite issues. All of these can impact someone’s health by leading to jaw problems, cavities, and gum disease. Braces can also be used to straighten someone’s smile.

HOW DOES BRACES WORK?

A wire is used to connect the brackets and bands, which are attached to the teeth. The orthodontist will gradually tighten the wire which will place pressure on the teeth. Over time, the teeth will move into the proper alignment.

WHEN TO GET BRACES?

Dental professionals recommend that every child have their first orthodontic examination by the age of seven. While the child may or may not need braces at that first visit, it is always better to identify potential problems as early as possible. The exact timing of the braces will depend on individual oral health issues. Therefore, it is best for you to discuss these issues with your orthodontist.

WHEN TO SEE AN ORTHODONTIST?

Children should have their first orthodontic visit by seven years old. During the adult years, see an orthodontist if you have a question about your bite, teeth alignment, or smile.

HOW TO FIND AN ORTHODONTIST?

Choose an orthodontist covered by your dental insurance if you have an appropriate plan. Furthermore, read reviews, talk to friends, look at board-certification status, and ask for a referral from your general dentist. This will help you find the right oral health professional.

DURING BRACES

BRACES INITIAL EXAM

The first exam is a chance for you to learn about braces and ask questions about your oral health, tooth alignment, and bite. Your orthodontist will discuss a proposed treatment plan with you at this time.

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT PLAN

The orthodontist will devise a treatment plan prior to starting any oral health procedure. During the visit, the orthodontist will review the risks and benefits of each treatment option. In addition, the orthodontist will review your lab models with you.

PLACING THE BRACES

During placement, the orthodontist will place bonding cement on the back of each bracket. Then, he or she will place the brackets on your teeth one by one. Bands will be placed around the molars at the back. Finally, a wire will be used to join the brackets and bands together.

SEPARATORS & RUBBER BANDS

Separators are rubber bands that are placed between the molars. These are used to create space for the bands. Then, rubber bands are wrapped around the brackets. This is done to move the teeth in a more efficient manner.

BRACES ADJUSTMENT

While you have braces in place, you will periodically return to the orthodontist for adjustments. This will be done every three to eight weeks. The orthodontist will check the movement of the teeth, replace degraded rubber bands, and alter the treatment plan if required.

LIVING WITH BRACES

EATING WITH BRACES

You might struggle to eat with braces at first. While braces are in place, try to avoid sticky or hard foods. In the beginning, eat soft foods until your teeth adjust to your braces. It is also recommended that you cut up your apples instead of biting into them.

BRUSHING WITH BRACES

Make sure that you properly clean teeth and gums while your braces are in place. Use an angled brush, focusing on one or two teeth at a time. Floss regularly to remove food that might be checked. Make sure you get your regular dental checkups while your braces are in place.

BRACES PAIN

Braces can cause you to have sore teeth. Soft pressure is applied to move the teeth into place, leading to discomfort. This pain can return after the wires are adjusted. In some cases, an over the counter pain medication can help. Talk to your orthodontist about this.

SPORTS & BRACES

You can play sports, including contact sports, with your braces. Make sure that you wear a mouthguard while playing. Choose an orthodontic mouthguard, which is slightly larger than typical ones.

BRACES EMERGENCY

In some cases, an orthodontic emergency can develop while wearing braces. Common examples include a loose band, a poking wire, or a broken bracket. Call your orthodontist right away if this happens.

AFTER BRACES

REMOVING THE BRACES

Once the treatment has finished, your orthodontist removes the braces. The brackets are squeezed at the base and then removed. This releases the bond material underneath the bracket. Then, the orthodontist will remove the bands from the molars. Finally, the tooth adhesive is removed.

RETAINER AFTER BRACES

After your braces are taken off, you will need to wear a retainer. This removable mouthpiece will keep your teeth in place. There are multiple types and your orthodontist may recommend a specific one.

TYPE OF RETAINERS

Hawley retainers are acrylic molds that are made specifically for your mouth. There is a wire across the teeth. Clear retainers are plastic trays that cover your teeth. Finally, fixed retainers are attached to your teeth.

COST OF RETAINERS

Hawley retainers cost $150 to $300 each. You will need an upper retainer and a lower one. Other types may vary in price. The price of the retainer is often included with the rest of the braces.

VIVERA RETAINERS

Vivera retainers are made to go with those who invest in Invisalign clear aligners, a popular alternative to braces. These are clear retainers that are molded to your teeth directly. They are meant to be inconspicuous.
