ABOUT DENTURE

WHAT ARE DENTURE?

Dentures are removable, custom-made prosthetic devices designed to mimic the appearance and functionality of natural teeth. The surrounding oral tissues provide them with support. Although dentures of the past were often somewhat lacking in functionality, comfort, and appearance, their modern counterparts are more comfortable than ever and feature such a natural appearance that it’s often difficult for the casual observer to tell them from the real thing. However, not all dentures are the same.

TYPES OF DENTURE

There are several different types of dentures. Both full and partial dentures have been around for a long time, while implant-supported dentures are relatively new to the picture. Your dentist can advise you on which type is best for you.

WHAT IS THE FOR COST OF DENTURES?

The cost involved in getting dentures varies depending on the type of dentures involved. Partial dentures, for instance, won’t come with as high a price tag as full dentures. A full set of conventional dentures cost anywhere from $2,500 to $6,000, while acrylic partial dentures have a range of $650 through $2,200. Other factors include how many tooth extractions are necessary, how many adjustments are needed, and any expense involved in temporary dentures to use until the permanent dentures are ready.

DOES INSURANCE COVER DENTURES?

The majority of full-coverage dental insurance policies pick up approximately 50% of the costs involved in getting dentures. Copayments and deductibles are still a part of the picture, so the financial commitment for patients can be significant.

WHO NEEDS DENTURES?

In situations where some of the teeth may be able to be salvaged, you may be a good candidate for partial dentures.

WHEN DO YOU NEED DENTURES

Signs that it may be time to consider dentures include persistent, painful toothaches that won’t go away — this could be an indication that your teeth or so severely decayed that they can’t be saved. Other possible signs are red, inflamed gum tissue, teeth that are noticeably loose, and significant pain and discomfort when chewing your food. Chronic indigestion is another possibility — when you’re unable to properly chew your food, it may cause an increase in intestinal gases.

ADVANTAGES OF DENTURES

The advantages of dentures include being able to properly chew your food, being able to speak more clearly, and being able to take pride in your appearance again. You’ll also be glad not to suffer from the pain and discomfort caused by decaying and damaged teeth.

ALTERNATIVES TO DENTURES

The best alternative to traditional dentures are implant-supported dental prosthetics. These can be for just one tooth, several teeth in a row, or an entire mouthful of teeth. Thanks to a new technique called “all-on-four” implants it’s only necessary to have one implant for every four prosthetic teeth — this means you can have a full set of teeth and only have to have eight implants.

LIMITATIONS OF DENTURES

The limitations of conventional dentures include that they must be removed and cleaned on a nightly basis. They may increase the possibility of oral infections, and they may take a long time to get used to.

WHAT ARE DENTURES MADE OUT OF?

Dentures are typically constructed from composite resins or porcelain. Porcelain types more closely mimic the natural appearance of teeth as well as feel similar to the touch. Composite resin types are less easily breakable and less likely to wear down over time.

DENTURES VS DENTAL IMPLANTS?

This is a highly personal decision that your dentist can help you make. Conventional dentures are generally more affordable, while implants provide a more natural appearance. Conventional dentures don’t involve an invasive procedure, but implants don’t have to be removed on a nightly basis for cleaning — just brush and floss like you would with natural teeth.

WILL THE PROCEDURE BE PAINFUL?

Advances in dental technology have greatly reduced the amount of pain and discomfort experienced by dental patients no matter what the procedure. During tooth extraction and implant installation, your dentist will administer a local anesthesia designed to keep pain to a minimum. Please feel free to discuss any concerns about pain with your dentist.

HOW ARE DENTURES PLACED?

Whether you’re getting conventional dentures or denture implants, the initial step involves extracting the existing teeth that are going to be replaced. This can be anywhere from a few teeth to a whole mouthful. Traditional dentures are held in place with a seal against the gums, while implant dentures are held in place via implants that have been surgically installed into the bone tissue of your jaw.

HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR DENTURES?

The traditional method of custom-fitting dentures involves a process known as cold-pouring. This provides an affordable option for those needing dentures. A more advanced procedure uses heat-injected technology to create stronger, more durable dentures more closely aligned to the contours of your gums.

LIVING WITH DENTURE

EATING, DRINKING & SMOKING WITH DENTURES

With the exception of hard candies and sticky substances, you should be able to resume normal eating and drinking shortly after getting dentures. However, it’s recommended that those who smoke quit at least several weeks before being fitted for dentures. Smoking causes the top layer of tissue on the gums to thicken, and when you stop, this layer begins to shed. This results in tenderness, which may cause pain if you wait to quit smoking until after you’re already wearing your dentures.

HOW DO DENTURES AFFECT MY SPEECH?

You should clean your dentures at least once per day using a toothpaste with soft bristles and a nonabrasive denture cleaner. They should also be soaked overnight in a mild solution designed for use on denture material.

ARE DENTURES APPEALING?

Dentures provide a highly appealing option to the appearance of missing and seriously decaying and discolored teeth. Certain types of denture material present an extremely natural appearance, and many patients find they look better than ever.

CAN I SLEEP WITH MY DENTURES?

Although it’s possible to wear conventional dentures while you sleep, doing so can result in bacterial buildup in the gum tissues. It’s recommended that you remove them to be cleaned and soaked in denture solution overnight. For the first few days, you should wear your dentures at all times, unless you are sleeping or cleaning them after a meal. You may feel comfortable wearing your dentures but don’t forget that your gums and mouth are best at rest when you are asleep.
